Learning outcomes

The course of legal medicine aims to provide students of the master's degree in jurisprudence with the basic elements of the medico-legal discipline with the aim of preparing them for the correct interpretation, in the field of civil law, of the answers obtainable from forensic medicine on the subject of assessing damage to the person in its various projections and, in the criminal field, on the subject of attribution of the time, the causes of death, as well as the identification of the means of production (so-called murder weapon), in addition to the so-called biological aggravating circumstances, regarding the crime of personal injury. The course also provides the elements on the subject of causal relationship, consent to health treatments, medical professional liability, imputability.

Course contents

Introduction. Background. Partition of Forensic Medicine.

Practice of health professions. Unauthorized practice of the profession. Professional secrecy. Legal qualifications. Reports to the judicial authority.

Medical records and certificates: evidentiary value and crimes of falsification and omission.

Consent and refusal of health treatments. Mandatory health treatments. Other aspects of Law 219/17.

Professional liability in the healthcare sector.

Causality.

The scientific proof.

Crime scene investigation.

Overview of forensic toxicology. Overview of forensic genetics.

Overview of thanatology, determination of death. Organ donation.

Overview of traumatology.

Personal injuries.

Mistreatment against family members and cohabitants.

Sexual violence.

Crimes against life.

Voluntary termination of pregnancy.

Personal damage and its projections.

Occupational injuries and occupational diseases

Teaching methods

Lectures. Discussion of cases. Interactive seminars.

Assessment methods

Oral exam concerning the program. Students will be asked to present a chosen questiion by evaluating the correlations and repercussions in the legal and medico-legal fields. This will be followed by a question chosen by the teacher.

Grading:

-Very limited knowledge and ability to analyze only after prompts, correct use of specific terms → 18-19;
-Limited knowledge and limited ability to analyze issues, correct use of specific terms → 20-24;
-Wide knowledge of the subject and ability to analyze issues autonomously and with a fluent use of specific terms → 25-29;
-Very exaustive knowledge of the subject, ability not only to analyze issues but also to make significant connections between different issues, full knowledge of technical language and in depth dissertation and analysis → 30-30L.
