Learning outcomes

Students will approach the instruments for translation (dictionary, corpora, grammar references).

Starting from the analysys of different Italian texts, they will propose different translation methods.

Course contents

We will translate different types of texts given by the teacher via ppt and handouts (to be acquired at the copisteria carta carbone in Via Oberdan n. 5) 

Types of texts:

The signs on the street; lost and found; simplified online newspaper (Chairman's Bao website level 3.): some chengyu; a set of shorts texts selected by the teacher to assess acquisition; two songs; two texts on China: urban and rural; two original newspaper articles.

 

During the course the students will focus on the difference between shumianyu (written language) and kouyu, practicing translation from one to another.

Teaching methods

We will read and analyse the texts in class. Students will start the translation in class in couples or small groups and continue at home individually. Each students will deliver her/his own translation which will be discussed in the group at the next session.

At home the students will build their own glossary.

At the end of the course the class will build a collective glossary.

 

Assessment methods

At the end of the year there will be a written exam.
