Learning outcomes

To acquire the fundamental physical-chemical concepts of quantum chemistry, thermodynamics, kinetics and electrochemistry which are the basis to understand some topics of the following teachings in the fields of biology, biochemistry, pharmaceutical chemistry, pharmacology, analysis and structural characterization of drugs and of plants of pharmaceutical industry.

Course contents

Thermodynamic. The three laws of Thermodinamics. Thermodynamic properties: Energy, Enthalpy, Entropy, Free Energy. Thermochemistry. Spontaneity and Equilibrium. Chemical potential. Phase Equilibrium. Chemical Equilibrium. Solutions properties.

Electrochemistry. Properties of electrolytic solutions. Electrochemical cells under equilibrium conditions and under current flow.

Kinetics. Experimental techniques for the determination of the rate equation, rate constant and its dependence from temperature. Reaction mechanism and their kinetic analysis. Basics of the theory of collision and of the transition state. Outlines of catalysis in homogeneous phase and enzyme-catalysed reactions.

Some fundamental Quantum Chemistry Concepts. Failure of classic mechanics. Duality wave-particle. Outlines of quantum mechanics (Schroedinger formalism): transitional, rotational and vibrational energies. Radiation-matter interactions: basic conceps of molecular spectroscopy.
