Academic Year 2022/2023

  • Moduli: Ana Cecilia Hillar (Modulo 1) Cristina Leoni (Modulo 2) Silvia Ferucci (Modulo 3) Silvia Ferucci (Modulo 4)
  • Teaching Mode: Traditional lectures (Modulo 1) Traditional lectures (Modulo 2) Traditional lectures (Modulo 3) Traditional lectures (Modulo 4)
  • Campus: Ravenna
  • Corso: Single cycle degree programme (LMCU) in Conservation and restoration of cultural heritage (cod. 8616)

Learning outcomes

The workshop activity (250 hours) examines ceramic artefacts. At the end of the workshop activity, the student, starting from the direct examination of the works, also by means of specially set up school workshops, is able to identify the material and morphological characteristics and to assess any problems of alteration and degradation; he/she possesses the skills to define an appropriate conservation and restoration methodology and to identify the most suitable products for treatment.

Course contents

The teaching includes a theoretical part (carried out with examples, case studies, bibliographical studies) interfaced with the technical-practical activity of conservation and restoration.

Laboratory activity examines the study and restoration of ceramic and glass artefacts; activities are carried out in the laboratory and at archaeological sites or sites of museum interest, at school sites and in the laboratory.

CERAMICS

1.Preliminary work on artefacts from archaeological sites or museums preparatory to complete restoration.

2.Conservative restoration: Cleaning/stabilisation, Consolidation, Recomposition.

3.Formal and pictorial integration: techniques and materials.

4.First intervention on the excavation; methods and techniques for recovering the artefacts and documentation of all phases by means of analytical sheets, graphic and photographic surveys.

5.In situ prevention, safety and maintenance.

6. Visits to archaeological museums analysis of the path of the artefact from excavation to musealisation, examples.

GLASS

1.Consolidation of the glass surface, problems and comparison between different polymers.

2.The integration of technical and methodological gaps.

3.The integration of the lacunae by direct method.

4. Gap integration by indirect method.

Teaching methods

The teaching includes a theoretical part (carried out with examples, case studies, bibliographical studies) interfaced with the technical-practical activity of conservation and restoration.

Students intervene on archaeological and historical-artistic artefacts, carrying out documentation from the outset with increasingly complete and articulated methods as the course progresses (documentation by means of descriptive and analytical sheets, graphic and photographic surveys).

The study of artefacts and causes of degradation is carried out with the support of specific surveys and in synergy with the diagnostic laboratories

Safety in the laboratory is addressed transversally with the intervention of experts and, as far as chemical risk is concerned, with the involvement of the chemistry course.

Teaching tools

Activities in the laboratory, at archaeological sites or museums and on school sites.
