Learning outcomes

The students will learn about the organization of tissues and organs of the human body. This knowledge will allow them to better understand the subsequent lectures of biochemistry, physiology, pathology and pharmacology.

Course contents

 1.Histology (2 teaching credits)

Epithelia and exocrine glands; Connective tissue proper; Adipose tissue; Cartilage; Bone; Blood and bone marrow; Lymphocytes, lymphoid tissue and the immune system; Nervous tissue; Muscle tissue.

2.Anatomy (8 teaching credits)

Muscolo-Skeletal system

Forms of articulations: Synarthrosis, Ampiarthrosis, Diarthrosis.

The axial skeleton: the vertebral column.

The diaphragm.

Cardiovascular system

Fibrous and serous pericardium; The Heart: morphology of the heart chambers and valves; Structure of the heart wall; Electrical system of the heart; Structure of arteries, veins and capillaries; The main arteries and veins of the human body; The lymph and the structure of lymphatic vessels.

Respiratory system

The nose and nasal cavities; Pharynx; Larynx; Trachea, bronchi, bronchioles and alveoli; Lungs and pleurae.

Digestive system

The oral cavity; Tongue; Pharynx and tonsils; Esophagus; Stomach; Small intestine (duodenum, jejunum, ileum); Exocrine and endocrine pancreas;Large intestine; Liver: organization of the liver vasculature and structure of the liver lobule; biliary tree (bile canaliculi, biliary ducts and gall bladder).

The spleen

Urinary system

The kidneys: Organization of the renal vasculature; The nephron: renal corpuscle and renal tubule; Structure of the juxtaglomerular complex; The ureters; The urinary bladder; Male and female urethra.

Endocrine system

Thyroid; Parathyroid; Adrenal cortex and medulla.

Intertegumentary system

The skin and sebaceous glands.

Female reprodutive system

Ovary; Fallopian tubes; Uterus and the menstrual cycle; Vagina.

Male reproductive system

Testes: Leydig cells and seminiferous tubules.

Central nervous system

The spinal cord and spinal nerves; The brainstem; The cerebellum; The diencephalon: hypothalamus and thalamus; The pituitary; The cerebral hemispheres and basal ganglia; Meninges and cerebro-spinal fluid; Main sensory and motor pathways.

Autonomic nervous system

Sympathetic, parasympathetic, and enteric.

Special senses

Olfactory system; Taste; Eye: sclera, cornea, iris, ciliary body, lens, retina and vitreous body. Ear: external and middle ear.

Teaching methods

The course comprises 10 teaching credits (80 hours). During the lectures slides and videos will be projected to fully illustrate all the topics of the Contents.

Assessment methods

Student learning  will be evaluated through an oral examination that will be graded in thirtieths. Usually 3 questions will be asked, related to the topics highlighted during the lectures.
