Course contents

Part 1

Jews and Christians: interactions, conflict and cohabitation. Historical perspectives.

Christianity developed out of ancient Jewish culture, and retained a complex relationship with Judaism ever since. This class aims to analyse Christian-Jewish relations focusing on three different set of questions: 1. Anti-Judaism and anti-Semitism; 2. interactions and forms of cohabitation between Jews and Christians; 3. representation of Christianity in Jewish literature.

Part 2 (dr. Miriam Benfatto)

The course is intended to offer an introduction to the Historical Jesus and the Quest for the Historical Jesus. The first part of the course will present the main themes inherent in the historical existence of Jesus, accompanied by a cultural and religious context of the first Jesus movement. The sources will be presented through critical reading, using a multidisciplinary approach. The second part will focus on historiographic research and its phases, in which the classical paradigm will be challenged, and will be presented a new approach that takes into account the new acquisitions and perspectives of current scientific and academic research.

Students will be provided with a glossary and a syllabus containing the detailed program, objectives, topics and bibliographic materials for each lesson.

2. The movement of Jesus in the Roman Palestine of the first century
3. The Jewish context of Jesus (eschatology, messianism and sectarian groups)
4. From orality to writing: the traditions on Jesus
5. The canonical gospels and the Canon
6. Paul and the first Christian communities (Letters and Acts of the Apostles)
7. Sources and criteria of historicity (Jewish, Christian and extra-Christian testimonies)
8. Anthropology of Christian origins: the example of the Gospel of John. Methodological issues (‘faith’, ‘theology’ and ‘historical research’)
9. The Quest for the historical Jesus: The old research on Jesus I
10. The Quest for the historical Jesus: The old research on Jesus II
11. The limitation of the old historiographic paradigm and perspectives
12. The challenges of modernity
13. The Jewish Jesus in the Jewish literary production: the anti-Christian controversy (13th-16th centuries)
14. The Jewish Jesus in Jewish literary production: the Wissenschaft des Judentum and the Jewish historiography (19th - 20th centuries)
15. Conclusions

Teaching methods

Lectures are organized as a seminar. Students' participation is highly recommended

Assessment methods

Students who attend at least 75% of the lessons are considered to be attending.

Oral exam. Questions will deal with general themes, and in his/her answer, the student should show his capacity to go into specific details. Among the elements that concur in the final evaluation there are: detailed knowledge of the book's content, property of language, and especially the capacity of organizing the information – also deriving from different sources – into complex answers showing expositive and critical skills.

Proper language and the ability to critically speak about the books' content will lead to a good/excellent final grade

Acceptable language and the ability to resume the books' content will lead to a sufficient/fair grade.

Insufficient linguistic proficiency and fragmentary knowledge of the books' content will lead to a failure in passing the exam.
