Use of the University seal in theses and final papers

How to use the University seal in theses or papers for first-, second- and single cycle degree programmes, PhD programmes, specialisation schools and professional master's programmes

What you need to know

The new rules for the use of the University seal allow you to place the seal on the cover and title page of your final thesis/paper. Any other use not covered by the above is prohibited.

The use of the Alma Mater Studiorum - University of Bologna® seal is not compulsory and is intended to highlight membership of the university community.

How you can use the University seal

If you wish to use the University seal, you will have to follow the graphic design rules of the Identity System, using the cover template [.docx 77 KB] and the title page template [.docx 78 KB].

These templates illustrate:

  • the exact position, size and colour of the seal on the title page
  • the position and size on the cover (in this case, as an exception to the Identity System, the seal will be monochrome and in a customisable colour, e.g. gold or silver, based on the many possibilities available according to the print materials and colours chosen).

If the cover is dark, you can exceptionally use the seal in gold or silver (in addition to white).

You will have to customise the following information (also according to the style guide provided by your programme, if available):

  • school/department of your programme
  • name of your programme
  • title of the final thesis/paper
  • your name and the names of your supervisor and assistant supervisor
  • graduation session and academic year
