Using advanced technology, embracing it in a responsible and conscious way and promoting a use that serves people and does not replace them – this is our University’s plan.
University Policy for an Ethical and Responsible Use of Generative Artificial Intelligence in Teaching and Research
The application possibilities of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) in the university are manifold. GenAI can enhance learning, improve accessibility and curriculum customisation, expand research opportunities also in collaborations with society and businesses; but it also poses challenges related to ethics, data quality and privacy, which require careful reflection and the provision of well-defined guidance by the University.
The University of Bologna has adopted a Policy on Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) to make sure that such innovative technology is used ethically, consciously and in accordance with the academic values. The Policy outlines the University’s general guidelines for using generative artificial intelligence in teaching and research, including activities carried out with third parties, and in the valorisation of knowledge from collaborations with society and businesses. It is the first step on a path that will lead to the adoption of guidelines in other important areas of the University and to the launch of GenAI information and training initiatives for the community of the University of Bologna.
Fundamental principles of the Policy
The Policy is founded on key principles:
- Centrality of the human being: GenAI must enhance human creativity and judgement without replacing them, which requires active supervision and critical thinking.
- Honesty and transparency: the use of GenAI must be declared and acknowledged properly.
- Accountability: users are responsible for GenAI results and must be able to account for them.
- Accuracy: users must adopt result verification processes that are suitable in the specific use case.
- Respect for rights and the environment: privacy, intellectual property rights and environmental sustainability must be protected.
The University is committed to keeping this Policy up-to-date, taking into account both technological and regulatory developments at national and international level, and any new needs that may emerge from the academic community. The aim is to ensure that the indications in the Policy effectively respond to changes, promoting a use of GenAI that is safe, inclusive and in line with the expectations of those who live and work within the University.
