Learning outcomes

The PhD in Surgical Sciences aims to train a researcher to become able to independently design and conduct research on the topics covered by the Doctorate. In particular, research topics include basic and biomolecular research including targeted and untargeted characterization of hormones and small molecules in biological fluids by mass spectrometry (metabolomics and steroidomics), bioengineering, clinical research, the development of microinvasive/endoscopic surgical techniques, the creation of 3D virtual models of anatomical portions and the understanding of the psychological mechanisms underlying the perception of pain and the experience of patients who undergo surgical interventions.

Activities to be carried out by Doctoral candidates

The training course includes basic and clinical research activities, to be carried out coordinated by the tutor. The locations include the laboratories of dermatopathology, pathology and molecular biology, the Center of Applied Biomedical Research (CRBA); the laboratories of hemodynamics, the lab of psychology, the ultrasound clinics, the departments, the operating rooms and in the eDIMES Lab of the Department of Specialized, Diagnostic and Experimental Medicine. Diagnostic and instrumental interventional techniques will be designed and developed, using the most modern technologies.
The PhD student will have the task of presenting and publishing the data obtained during the research activity.

Research training activities compliant with the Doctoral programme's learning outcomes

Lectures and seminars are planned with the PhD student's research topics and transversal topics based on research activity (how to participate in national and international calls for funding) and future outlets (how to collaborate with public and private research institutions. Through experiential learning based on practical activities, lectures and seminars will aim to teach the students to become independent in carrying out the planned research and clinical activities. Attendance to an English course organized by CLA is mandatory as well as a research period abroad of at least 3 months.

Internationalization features

The PhD in Surgical Sciences is part of the framework agreement for the assignment of double doctoral degrees between the University of Bologna and Mekelle University (Ethiopia) - Rep. 762/2020 Prot. n. 5583 of 13/01/2020 and between the University of Bologna and the University of Medicine Tirana (Albania) - Prot. n. 0205923 of 02/09/2021 - Contracts - Conventions 6213/2021. The annual call for applications for admission to doctoral courses is advertised on the website and is avdertised by the members of the Teaching Board to colleagues from other international universities. PhD students are obliged to spend a three-month research period abroad, extendable to a maximum of eighteen months. Lectures and seminars are held by foreign lecturers.

Expected research results and products

The Doctoral program requires, from the year 2,   the publication in indexed international journals of at least 1 original article per year, active participation with abstract presentation in at least 2 congresses per year and / or the publication of a book chapter or a monograph. Within the three year program, it is required the publication of at least two articles  in journals  on PUBMED with impact factor.
