Learning outcomes

By the end of the course students will have acquired a thorough knowledge of Chinese civilization in its different historical, cultural and literary expressions. They will be able to approach critically the related literature and its problems, to identify and classify literary works and to develop analytical investigations of the written sources.

Course contents

Brief overview of the birth of teh birth of Chinese writing, myths, legends and historical documents. Panoramic view on the Hundred Schools of thought and birth of the Chinese thought, and possible contemporaneity with Greek thought. Confucius and Confucians, Laozi, Zhuangzi and Daoismo, Legism and birth of historiography. Reading of passages from the texts of the main thinkers. The great Poetry, a parallel of the maturation of thught and wrting.The birth of historiography. From Shijing to Quyuan nd the inventions of poetic styles: poetry as a space for intellectuality, theory and stylistic inventions. Recurring lexicon in Chinese Civilization as the basis for recurrent identity choices.

Teaching methods

Seminar method, discussion on some topics and questions to be answered in writing from one week to the next, with a note of a page. The texts to be read will be presented but will be read during the lessons, so as to be able to answer the questions weekly.

Each attending student must also present to the other students a dissertation chosen collegially on one of the topics discussed and discussed; the presentation must take place by the end of the course, in the last week. This presentation will form part of the final evaluation.
Non-attending students who can not participate in the group presentation are invited to present to the teacher 8 days before the exam a written report of no more than 6 printed pages, with personal observations on the main topics studied in the bibliography. The report will be presented during the oral exam, to which further questions can be added.

Assessment methods

Un esame orale accerterà la capacità dello studenti di orientarsi nella scansione degli eventi trattati durante il corso, e di cogliere contnuità e discntinuità nelle principali congiunture storiche.

Le tesine da presentare in classe per i frequentanti varranno come una parte (1/3) importante della valutazione finale.

Il raggiungimento da parte dello studente di una visione organica dei temi affrontati a lezione e delle conoscenze previste per la disciplina congiunta alla loro utilizzazione critica, la dimostrazione del possesso di una padronanza espressiva e di linguaggio specifico saranno valutati con voti di eccellenza.
Una conoscenza mnemonica della materia e capacità di sintesi e di analisi articolate in un linguaggio corretto, ma non sempre appropriato, porteranno a valutazioni discrete.

Lacune formative e/o linguaggio inappropriato, seppur in un contesto di conoscenze minimali del materiale d'esame, condurranno a voti che non supereranno la sufficienza.

Lacune formative, linguaggio inappropriato, mancanza di orientamento all'interno dei materiali bibliografici previsti dal corso saranno valutati negativamente.

Gli studenti non frequentanti che non potrannao partecipare alla presentazione collettiva sono invitati a presentare alla docente 8 giorni prima dell'esame una relazione scritta di non più di 6 pagine a stampa, con le osservazioni personali sui principali tsti studiati presenti in bibliografia. La relazione verrà presentata nel corso dell'esame orale, a cui poi si potranno aggiungere altre domande.
