84555 - Statistics

Academic Year 2020/2021

  • Teaching Mode: Traditional lectures
  • Campus: Bologna
  • Corso: Second cycle degree programme (LM) in Legal Studies (cod. 9062)

Learning outcomes

At the end of the course unit, students know the most important aspects of statistics from the methodological and operational point of view. In particular, students are capable to: - synthesize information in statistical distributions and graphs; - select and calculate the most consistent average values and measures of variability in the light of specific problems concerning given phenomena; - measure the intensity of the relationship between characters, even where they are of different nature.

Course contents

First section - Exploratory statistics

Classification of statistical variables. Data representation. Mean values. Variability and concentration. Linear regression and correlation.

Second section - Elements of probability

Events and logical operators. Combinatorics. Basic probability. Conditional probability and independence. Bayes Formula. Binomial random variable. Gaussian distribution.

Third section - Statistical Inference

Population and sample. Statistics and estimators. Confidence intervals for a frequency. Performing a statistical test. Comparison of two frequencies and two mean values.
