Learning outcomes

At the end of the course, the student deepens the knowledge of Russian literature, taking into account the various issues related to periodization, different movements and literary schools as well as the main critical interpretations and thematic approaches, with particular attention to the historical and cultural context in general. He develops methodological and linguistic tools to address the analysis and interpretation of literary texts.

Course contents

RUSSIAN LITERATURE: “THAW” AND “STAGNATION”

1. After a short historical and cultural introduction to the period 1953-1991, the students will be given critical analysis of some works of authors whose literary activity unfolds mainly during the period of the so called Thaw and Stagnation.

2. During the course, students will also examine problems related to the translation of some literary works. The most significant translation issues will be discussed. Comparison of different Italian translations of the same text will be also made. In order to develop competence in the field of literary traslation, students will be also required to translate, under the professor’s supervision, some texts from Russian into Italian, thus learning to correctly use bilingual and monolingual dictionaries.

Teaching methods

During each lesson texts in Russian and in Italian translation will be read and analysed.

Assessment methods

The test consists in:

- a written test translation from Russian into Italian;

- an oral exam which has the aim of evaluating the critical and methodological ability of the students.

At the beginning of the exam the student will present the list of the books he intends to discuss.

The student will be asked to answer questions concerning each part of the programme: 1. readings for historical, literary and traductological background; 2. material provided by the teacher; 3. readings for individual study.

The written test is not preliminary to the oral exam.

The final evaluation corresponds to the average of the two parts.

Those students who are able to demonstrate a wide and systematic understanding of the issues covered during the lessons, are able to use these critically and who master the field-specific language of the discipline will be given a mark of excellence (27-30 cum laude).

Those students who demonstrate a mnemonic knowledge of the subject with a more superficial analytical ability and ability to synthesize, a correct command of the language but not always appropriate, will be given a ‘fair’ mark (23-26).

A superficial knowledge and understanding of the material, a scarce analytical and expressive ability that is not always appropriate will be rewarded with a pass mark or just above a pass mark (18-22).

Students who demonstrate gaps in their knowledge of the subject matter, inappropriate language use, lack of familiarity with the literature in the programme bibliography will not be given a pass mark.
