04762 - Outfitting and Museography

Academic Year 2021/2022

  • Teaching Mode: Traditional lectures
  • Campus: Cesena
  • Corso: Single cycle degree programme (LMCU) in Architecture (cod. 0881)

Learning outcomes

At the end of the course, the student acquires sufficient knowledge to understand the complexity and articulation of an architectural project in the museographic field. The student also acquires the basic knowledge in the disciplinary field of Museography learning the ability to foreshadow metadesign schemes, methods and solutions aimed at the project. Through the acquired knowledge, the student can then use the architectural project as a methodology aimed at the study, analysis and presentation of the ideative process of the museographic and set-up project and is able to define its overall development.

Course contents

- today is called to confirm its dual and irreplaceable task of tradition and translation. First of all, it must pass on what preceded and generated us: the TRADITION to be understood, with the classics, as knowledge entrusted to the so-called "lampadoforìa", the uninterrupted transmission of the torch from generation to generation; with Agostino, like living "il palazzo della memoria"; with Goethe, as a legacy to be conquered and not as an annuity to be cherished. The perception of the continuum to which to belong preserves us from the drunkenness of the newness and the dazzle of believing that the present is reduced to novelty and that novelty exhausts the truth. No less urgent is the other commitment: TRANSLATION, that is, the need to interpret change and the assertion of new languages, new social and political scenarios, technological monocratism using the winning weapon of dialogue, which only the university possesses by history and vocation, because, as Eco added, it is "l’unico luogo in cui si può applicare correttamente un approccio unificato alla diversità”.

"COLLECTING", "PRESERVING" and "PASS ON" are the archetypes and anthropological foundations of collecting and therefore museality in the broadest sense. The acquisition of the main historical experiences in the field of specific disciplinary, from the past to the current dramatic post-COVID-19 scenarios, becomes the preparatory condition for the formulation of a coherent knowledge.The term "set-up" (allestimento) identifies a precise design area peculiar to the architect. It is, in fact, a very wide field in itself that involves multiple disciplines: some related to history, such as conservation or archeology, others to communication such as graphics or semiotics, others to more technological fields such as lighting technology or industrial design, others to commercial fields such as marketing or merceology. The course aims to investigate this design field considering it in its sense of "place" of relationship between objects/subjects, overcoming the strict classification of the "products" to be exhibited or the conventional distinction between container and content.

Teaching methods

The teaching of the course is structured according to a "path" of approach to the discipline made possible by a synthetic bibliographic reference framework, deepened and enriched by an articulated program of ex cathedra lessons and a design experience. In the lessons will be analyzed the fundamental themes of the discipline starting also from some "keywords" such as MEMORY, IMAGINATION, CONCEPTION, PROJECT, EXECUTION and comparative analysis on exemplary cases in reference to the theme of the project exercise. Video projects will be used regularly during the lessons. The lessons will be set up in a seminar way, in order to favor the critical personal contribution of the students; at the same time the progress status of the project will be verified; issues, references, hypotheses, etc. will be discussed collectively.

Assessment methods

Students will be called to carry out a design experience consisting in the design of a temporary pavilion intended for VISITOR CENTER for the historic center of the city of Cesena. The "location" of the intervention will be identified by each individual student on the basis of peculiar evaluations. The project will be based on the realization of a "storytelling" related to the narrative path and the complex relationships that are established between the architectural "object" and the contextual space. The project will be carried out using the tools of architectural design taking into account the graphic techniques most appropriate to the theme. The graphic and analytical materials necessary for the drafting of the project, as well as a specific bibliography, will be provided during the course and made available on the virtuale.unibo.it

The learning is verified through the evaluation of the design exercise, which ascertains the acquisition of the knowledge and skills expected through the performance of an oral test lasting at least 30 minutes without the help of notes or books. The oral exam consists of: a review of the design exercise during which the teacher informs the student about the correction criteria, receiving any clarifications of the student himself; an oral in-depth study aimed at ascertaining the knowledge and general skills acquired applied to a critical discussion of the project.

Passing the exam will be guaranteed to students who will demonstrate mastery and operational ability in relation to the key concepts illustrated in the course, and in particular to the ability to understand and manage the complexity of the subject designfully. A higher score will be attributed to students who will demonstrate that they have understood and be able to use all the contents of the course by illustrating them with skills and peculiar language properties, solving even complex issues, showing good operational control, etc. Failure to pass the exam may be due to insufficient knowledge of key concepts, lack of mastery of the specific technical language and lack or insufficient operational capacity. The evaluation of the exam will be determined on the basis of the following criteria to which up to a maximum of 6/30 each will be assigned respectively:

  1. quality of the papers submitted;
  2. quality of the proposed architectural system;
  3. effectiveness and expressiveness of the proposal;
  4. quality of executive details;
  5. congruence with the theoretical and bibliographic aspects of the course.

Design tutorial

Project of a temporary pavilion for VISITOR CENTER for the historic center of the city of Cesena.

Design works

The papers will be written in A4 format in a notebook containing - in the form of "storytelling" - the entire design path (MOLESKINE Notebook Classic format A4 cm 21x29.7 - hardcover - paper 70 gr / square meters ivory or other similar) using manual and/or digital techniques of drawing (notes, reflections, sketches, quotations, collages, photo-insertions, etc.).

In accordance with the health conditions and the provisions dictated by the Government and the Alma Mater Studiorum, visits to museums, temporary art exhibitions and companies operating in the disciplinary field will be organized.

Teaching tools

Probably in the first semester of the academic year 2020/21 the University of Bologna will provide teaching activities in mixed, in presence and at a distance. The University is in fact constantly working to guarantee the activities in presence for the widest possible number of students, in compliance with the regulatory provisions and safety protocols. The University is working on a twofold front: on the one hand it is maintaining and updating the adaptation of classrooms through renewed technological infrastructures and on the other hand it is consolidating the most appropriate transformations to accompany teachers on the path of continuous improvement of teaching methods.The lessons will take place with the use of graphic and photographic material presented in Power Point format; the teacher, using the camera supplied to the classrooms, will propose short drawing and graphic representation sessions to support the problems addressed.The teaching material necessary to carry out the project exercise will be made available to students on the platform virtuale.unibo.it in digital format.
