Learning outcomes

The course aims at providing students with the basis of the XIXth and XXth century Political History in European and non-European countries, with particular reference to the political-institutional systems. At the end of the course students: - will know the most relevant aspects of Contemporary History; - will be able to deal with the main issues and the fundamental cruxes of the contemporary historical evolution; - will be able to analyze the most important historical events of the Present Age both diachronically and synchronically.

Course contents

The Contemporary History Course aims at giving students a basic frame of political history in 19th and 20th century European and extra- European countries. A special attention will be paid to political-institutional systems. The chronology of the course ranges from the Wien Congress to the 70ies of the twentieth century. Classes provide a compared analysis of the main historical events which concerned Italy, France, Great Britain, Spain and Russia in addition to the most relevant extra-European facts.

 

The course’s lectures will be organised partly online via MS TEAMS and partly in presence. The number of students allowed in class is determined on the basis of room capacity and according to the healh and safety provisions about the pandemic emergency. In case the number of students willing to attend in presence is higher than permitted, a rotation system will be organized, in order to allow all students to participate. Regardless of the health-related conditions and the specific organization of the course, students will be able to follow the lessons of the entire course remotely on MS TEAMS.

Assessment methods

The modalities of the final exam for attending students will be explained at the presentation of the course.

 

The exam for non-attending students consists of an open-ended test on the manual part (written or oral based on the number of subscribers on the Almaesami platform) and an oral test on the monograph chosen by the student. Students are required to show up on the day of the exam with their university badge. For the oral exam the student is required to present himself bringing the volume studied with him. Before enrolling, the student must check his / her administrative position (for example unpaid fees or change of location). The tests on the manual part and on the monographic part take place on the same day. To pass the exam it is necessary to obtain at least a sufficient mark in both tests (manual part and monographic part).

 

It will be assessed as excellent the performance of those students achieving an organic vision of the course contents, the use of a proper specific language, the originality of the reflection as well as the familiarity with the tools for analysing the contemporary history. It will be assessed as discrete the performance of those students showing mostly mechanical or mnemonic knowledge of the subject, not articulated synthesis and analysis capabilities, a correct but not always appropriate language, as well as a scholastic study of the strategies for analysing the contemporary history. It will be assessed as barely sufficient the performance of those students showing learning gaps, inappropriate language, lack of knowledge of the strategies for analysing the contemporary history. It will be assessed as insufficient the performance of those students showing learning gaps, inappropriate language, no orientation within the recommended bibliography and inability to analyse the contemporary history.
