This teaching activity contributes to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals of the UN 2030 Agenda.

Academic Year 2023/2024
Learning outcomes
At the end of the course, the student acquires the skills to survey and monitor transport infrastructures, from the project phase to the support for their management, using advanced geomatic techniques.
Course contents
The course focuses on the integration of different geomatics technologies in mobile mapping systems (MMS), designed to survey transport infrastructures (such as roads or railways). The course is organized in two modules and encompasses the following topics.
Module 2
Review of geodesy: Shape of the Earth - Gravitational Field - Geoid – Heights Definition – Global and Local datum definition and geodetic network positioning – Approximate reference surfaces and coordinate systems.
Principles of positioning: Introduction to Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) – Pseudorange and carrier phase observables – Single Point Positioning – differential GPS (DGPS) – Real time Kinematic (RTK) – Network for real time positioning (NRTK).
Principles of navigation: Inertial sensor (IMU) – Integration between IMU and GNSS data – Navigation parameters.
Module 1 (Prof. E Mandanici)
Review of main cartographic projections and their properties. Geodetic reference frames and their transformations, from local surveys to international systems.
Principles of airborne (LiDAR) and terrestrial laser scanning (TLS). The workflow of laser data processing. Structure from motion (SfM) for close-range photogrammetry.
Integration of laser and photogrammetric data in mobile mapping systems (MMS).
Basics of Geographical Information Systems (GIS). Analysis operators on vector and raster datasets. Georeferencing of digital maps by GIS software.
Practical examples of GIS applications.
Teaching methods
The lectures will be supplemented with practical exercises on the field and in class using open-source software packages. These activities are structured so that during each session students will be able to produce practical solutions to the theoretical problems outlined during lectures.
Assessment methods
The final examination consists of a written test with possible oral integration.
Teaching tools
Slides or multimedia tools are used for the lectures in classroom.
Practical exercises are carried out on students’ personal computers, using preferably open source software.
The Virtuale didactic platform is used.
