Academic Year 2022/2023

  • Teaching Mode: Traditional lectures
  • Campus: Bologna
  • Corso: First cycle degree programme (L) in Environmental Engineering (cod. 9198)

Also valid for First cycle degree programme (L) in Mechanical Engineering (cod. 0927)

Learning outcomes

The student face up to basic knowledge on the subject of raw materials, in relation to supply, treatment, and recycling issues. Fundamental topics such as national and European framework strategies, environmental criticalities, theoretical and practical elements for the choice of machines and processes will be addressed.

The theme of raw materials in Europe and in Italy. Critical materials, minerals and strategic metals, construction materials and industrial minerals. Procurement and mining. Recycling and Urban Mining.

General information on the main rocky and mineral materials.

Main properties of materials and characterization.Brief history on some materials and some types of plants. The main properties of minerals and rock materials. The size of a set of particles. Achievement in the laboratory analysis of grain and their analytical representation. The size classification: direct and indirect classification methods. The screening industry. Main types of screens: capacity and efficiency. Theoretical basis of the indirect classification: the law of motion of a solid immersed in a fluid. The mechanical and centrifugal classifiers. The hydrocyclones. The performance of the classification action. The pretreatment and primary treatment of physico-mechanical waste water. The comminution. Comminution theory for the determination of energy consumption. Definition and calculation of the work (work index) and specific energy in comminution. Crushing and Grinding. Design and operating parameters. The cylindrical ball mills and bars: the calculation of energy consumption, choice of grinding charge and coating. Concentration methods. The preconcentrazione in heavy medium (sink-float). Gravimetric methods: Electrostatic and magnetic separation. The flotation: theoretical and physical chemical basis. The technology of flotation machines. Specific cases of design: general patterns of a complete mineral enrichment plant, recycling plant and of a plant for the aggregates preparation.

Teaching methods

Oral speaking by teacher in class on all the program issues.

Exercises in class related on the main demonstration and calculation that are present in the course topics,

Depending on the pandemic conditions, DICAM LAGIRN Laboratory visit, in order to see the main machineries that are considered in class.

Assessment methods

Firstly, a written assignment is due on topics, as exercises and demonstrations, similar to which carried out by teacher and students together in class.

It's required to achieve the minimum mark, 18/30, in the written test to be called for oral exam. The written mark could remain available for a year.

The oral exam focuses first on the discussion of mistakes of the written test. Then a couple of questions on the whole program will be the subject of the oral interview
