Learning outcomes

At the end of the course, the student will know the basics of microeconomic analysis and their application to the study of tourist markets. In particular, the student will be able to:

-understand the behavior of consumers and firms and the functioning of markets, with particular focus on tourism;

-recognize and analyze the various market structures, with particular focus on tourism;

-apply the principles of microeconomics to the tourist market

Course contents

1. Introduction: principles of microeconomics and introduction to economic modelling

2. Supply and Demand: consumer and producer surplus, demand elasticity

3. Influencing market equilibrium: fixed prices and taxation

4. International trade

5. Individual decisions: rational consumer and production costs/factors

6. Market structures: perfect competition, monopoly, oligopoly, monopolistic competition and product differentiation

7. Trade-off private incentives vs public outcomes: externalities, public goods, welfare state and income distribution

8. Role of information: uncertainty, risk and private information
