Learning outcomes

Students will have specific knowledge of main cognitive functions (i.e. attention, memory, learning, thinking, language) and emotional processes involved in human information processing and behavior.

Course contents

ATTENTION, CONSCIOUSNESS AND SLEEP: Human Information Processing. Attentional systems: arousal and sustained attention; selective attention; executive functions. Circadian rythms; functions of sleep and dreaming.

LEARNING AND MEMORY: Associative learning (classical/pavlovian and instrumental/operant conditioning). Rewards and punishments. Motivation and learning. Memory and Emotion.

LANGUAGE AND COMMUNICATION: Verbal and non verbal languages. Acquisition of verbal language. Non verbal communication.Psychological and communication processes involved in doctor-patient relationship and in patient's compliance to treatment.

EMOTION AND MOTIVATION: Biological basis of emotion. Motivation systems. Theory of emotion. Emotional responses. Emotion and cognitive processes. Emotional expression and health. 

STRESS : The stress response. Acute and chronic stress; physiological and psychological reactions to stress; coping strategies. Emotional modulation of stress and pain.
