Learning outcomes

At the end of the course the student knows in depth the innovative technologies for medical radiology: DICOM communication, HIS / RIS / PACS.

Course contents

Introduction to information systems in healthcare. Fundamentals of databases. Fundamentals of computer networks and ISO-OSI model

The Radiology Information System: components and workflow

The Picture Archiving and Communication System: components and workflow

RAID systems

Standards in healthcare: DICOM, HL7 and the IHE initiative

Characterization of medical images: acquisition and parameters for quality assessment. Image compression techniques. Main image processing approaches and examples.

Readings/Bibliography

Handouts and materials provided by the teacher.

Reading the reference scientific articles that will be provided by the teacher on specific topic for an in-depth approach is recommended.

Teaching methods

Lectures and exercises in the computer lab with dedicated software

Assessment methods

The final evaluation consists of an oral test aimed at ascertain whether the student has understood the topics presented in the class.

The test will be evaluated based on the following parameters:

- knowledge, mastery and deepening of the contents

- critical ability to rework concepts and exhibition capacity

- technical-scientific terminological correctness
