88364 - Green Technologies for Industrial Chemistry

Academic Year 2021/2022

  • Teaching Mode: Traditional lectures
  • Campus: Bologna
  • Corso: Second cycle degree programme (LM) in Low Carbon Technologies and Sustainable Chemistry (cod. 9246)

Learning outcomes

At the end of the course students are acquainted with the chemical processes and the application of green chemistry principles, renewables as raw materials for fuel and chemical industry, minimization of waste and application of green metrics, capture and utilization of CO2. Students are aware of the scale-up methodologies, industrialization of safe technologies and intrinsically safe chemical processes.

Course contents

Basic Concepts of industrial chemistry: Type of processes and products in the chemical industry. Flow sheet guide lines for chemical processes. Role of the main reaction parameters. Characteristics and type of reactors, reactor performances and selection. Effect of reaction parameters on key performance indicators (yield, Productivity, etc.).

Green chemistry principles in industrial chemistry, Key parameter and Green metrics in industrial chemical processes.

Industrial chemical processes in practice (examples) and evolution during time to improve sustainability. Conversion of renewables,ì minimization of waste and water use.

Risk analysis and risk assesment in chemical processes.

Teaching methods

Room lectures supported by power point presentation. The presentations will be available in IOL.

Assessment methods

Learning assessment is based on oral examination at the end of the course.

The oral examination will take about 30 minutes and it will assess:

· the comprehension of the fundamentals of industrial chemistry, of chemical processes, and the main aspects affecting sustainability of the chemical processes

· the ability to correlate the choice of the chemical process and the reaction parameters with key parametesr and green indicators

· the ability to discuss case studies addressing sustainability issues.
