Learning outcomes
At the end of the course students should be able to follow a lesson in German, to read a complex text about social or political sciences and make an oral report on it in German. To this purpose they should reach a minimum level of B1 (Council of Europe framework) for spoken and written German, while the ideal level is B2, and a minimum level of B1 for reading comprehension – ideal level B2.
Course contents
The course will consist of reading a selection of political and sociological texts from the book in question in order to acquire the relevant vocabulary and grammatical rules necessary for the level of German to be achieved.
Readings/Bibliography
The text used during the lectures is: Tatsachen über Deutschland, available at https://www.tatsachen-ueber-deutschland.de/de/Deutschland-Buch-Ausgabe-2018.
During the course and according to specific needs, materials on the grammar topics covered will be provided or indicated.
Teaching methods
lectures in English and German; exercises to test the vocabulary and grammatical skills acquired.
Assessment methods
Students attending the course can take advantage of a preliminary written test which will take place online halfway through the course. A second written examination will take place at the end of the course. For those who have also attended the mother-tongue lectures, the assessment of the mother-tongue teacher will form part of the final grade. For students who have passed the intermediate tests, the final examination (at the official "appello") will consist of an oral presentation of a power-point document on one of the topics discussed during the course. If students fail one or both of the intermediate exams, or did not took part at all, they will have to supplement the oral presentation with one or two short reading aloud from the text adopted for the course Tatsachen über Deutschland, translation thereof and answering some grammar questions.
Teaching tools
Mother-tongue teacher lessons are an integral part of the course and students are strongly encouraged to follow it.
