Course contents

This course introduces students to key themes and approaches in the history of obstetrics from the prehistory to today, from midwives to obstetricians. We will explore how control of childbirth has moved from women themselves to medical professionals. We will discuss the ways in which women have sought to re-assert control of childbirth in recent years. We will examine the social relationship between a woman and her birth attendant, midwifery as a female institution, childbirth and female bonding, and the relationships between the professionalization and developement of medicine and changes in the status of women.
