Learning outcomes

At the end of the course students will know the theories of development, the causes of underdevelopment and the connections between this and the environment, together with sustainable development. Moreover they will understand the strategies of poverty reduction worldwide, promoted by the international bodies, through sustainable development policies and territorial practices realized at the local level, such as tourism and international cooperation.

Course contents

The course will deal with the following issues:

  • Development indexes
  • Development/Underdevelopment
  • Mainstream and alternative theories of development + post-development theories
  • Territorial impacts: environment, society, economy

STUDENTS ATTENDING THE CLASSES

  1. Study of the Power point presentations shown during the lessons and of the notes taken
  2. Grandi S., Viaggio tra le concezioni dello sviluppo, La Mandragora, Imola, 2018
  3. Presentation to the class of a book read in group or of a research work done in group on a topic agreed with the professor
  4. Active participation to the activities and seminars proposed during the lessons.

THE PROGRAMME FOR STUDENTS ATTENDING THE CLASSES MAY VARY DEPENDING ON THE NUMBER OF ATTENDING STUDENTS. THE DETAILED PROGRAMME WILL BE EXPOSED AND DISCUSSED DURING THE FIRST LESSONS OF THE COURSE.

Teaching methods

In presence lessons, supported by the use of power point presentations, available among the didactic materials.

Students will be invited to share a participative attitude during the lessons, by participating to class/group discussions, seminars and other cooperative activities.

Assessment methods

The examination is an oral one for which students will have to register for on the AlmaEsami website.

STUDENTS ATTENDING THE CLASSES

Attending students have to study the programme described during the first lesson and published on the power point "Presentation of the course".

Assessment methods:

For students attending the classes the exam will aim at testing their comprehension of the geographical, economical, social and cultural phenomena described during the lessons both by the teacher and the other students' presentations and discussed together. Participation to the discussion is a key element to evaluate the students, and with it personal reflection on the issues studied. Moreover, students will be evaluated on their communication skills and on the use of a correct terminology.

STUDENTS NON ATTENDING THE CLASSES

Non attending students have to study the programme described during the first lesson and published on the power point "Presentation of the course".

Assessment methods:

For students not attending the classes, the exam will aim at testing their comprehension of the geographical, economical, social and cultural phenomena studied, and during the exam they will be invited to propose a personal reflection on the issues studied. Moreover, they will be evaluated on their communication skills and on the use of correct terminology.
