Learning outcomes
At the end of the course, the student:
- will have a general knowledge on the motivational and cognitive processes characterising social interaction and intergroup relations;
- will know and will be able to apply some basic theoretical and methodologicaltools to interpret such processes;
- will develop relational skills that allow to collaborate within teams composed by other professional figures.
Course contents
Introductory information on the history of social psychology will be provided together with basic introduction to the main epistemological approaches of the discipline theoretical constructs and research paradigms. A great deal of attention will be payed to the processes of knowledge formation and social judgment. Then, the more pragmatic aspects of social behaviour will be considered such as communication and the bases of altruistic and aggressive behaviour. The course will then address issues regarding the self and identity. Moreover, topics referring to group life will be addressed highlighting both intragroup and intergroup processes. Additionally, social influence processes will be considered.
These contents are highly relevant for the training of Social Workers who, in their professional practice, will work in a team and will interact with individuals belonging to different groups. Therefore, it is necessary that they understand social processes that underlie interpersonal, intragroup, and intergroup relationships.
