Learning outcomes

At the end of the learning activity the students develop  civic and soft skills to work with different groups of people, through active community engagement and critical reflection. They know the dynamics of different groups in social and community contexts; know how to apply models of community intervention and techniques of community needs and assets analysis.

At the end of the workshop the student:

- learns the psychological assessment in relation to the clinical case;

- learn the clinical methodology applied to the clinical case.

Course contents

The Laboratory is for students of the first year of the Second Cycle Degree/Two Year Master in Clinical Psychology of the School of Psychology and Education.

The Laboratory will take place during the first semester (October 2021-January 2022) for the M-PSI/05 part (Community Psychology - Professor Cinzia Albanesi and Professor Luana valetta) and during the second semester (March-May 2022) for the M-PSI/08 part (Clinical Psychology - Professor Laura Sirri) at the Cesena Campus - Department of Psychology (address: piazza Aldo Moro, 90 and viale Europa, 115).

The lab will allow students to apply the methods and tools of community psychology and use them in the design (and possibly implementation) of a support/prevention/well-being promotion project in the community through Service Learning (SL). The SL methodology encourages experiential learning (Learning) through active school/community engagement (Service). Students work on a concrete problem identified through the collaboration of a universities and community /school/local organization partnership.Reflective activities allow students to discuss about principles and methods of the discipline through the lens of the experience, to understand the challenges of their application in real contexts and to develop civic and transferable competences for psychologists.

 SL include the following activities:

• context analysis, community needs and assets analysis in collaboration with local stakeholders / focus groups with target population,
• design of the intervention (objectives and methodologies) and of the assessment plan,
• monitoring process and reflective activities in small group;
  
• implementation of the intervention (if possible),
• documentation of the course (group final report)

Teaching methods

Service-Learning integrates the traditional learning with a "community engagement" experience on real-world issues through fieldwork/research/intervention. Methods used will be the following: short lectures, small group work, guided discussions, collection and analysis of qualitative and/or quantitative data, documentation and dissemination with local stakeholders. The class will be divided into small groups that will work continuously on the same project. S-L includes classroom activities (about 10h) and field work (about 20h). During class students will be supervised on the following topics:

• Context analysis
• Design of intervention and evaluation plans
• Implementation of the intervention
• Process documentation
• Monitoring
• Promotion of citizenship competences, in particular critical reflexivity and social responsibility

Clinical cases presentation and discussion. Role playing. Group work. Practical examples of psychological interviews.

Assessment methods

Credits are acknowledged to those who:

• have attended classes

• contributed to the final written report illustrating  the project/intervention developed by each group and participated actively to the presentation of the S-L report to community stakeholders. The instructions for the preparation of the final report will be provided during classes.

• have produced an individual written critical reflection on their S-L experience, using a field diary and attending reflective classes

• provide feedback on the experience to their tutors of the community organizations through a letter

• completed the evaluation questionnaires.

 

M-PSI/08: Laura Sirri

Active participation to the activities proposed during classes and full attendance are essential in order to be admitted to the final examination. The final evaluation will consist in a written exam (a short composition) that will last 1 hour and will be concerned with the topics discussed in class. The final evaluation will take place during the last class scheduled.
