Learning outcomes

At the end of the course, the student is familiar with the laboratory with various methodologies, including histochemistry and immunohistochemistry, for the study of cellular and subcellular structures in the light microscope. In particular, the student is able to recognize morphological aspects that allow the diagnosis of various human tissues in their peculiarities.

Course contents

Techniques for the study of the histology: optical and electronic microscopy. Techniques for the preparation of histological materials for observation. Importance of cell shape and size. Strategies for the recognition of optical microscopy of epithelial coatings, exocrine and endocrine glands; Connective tissues (mucous mature, fibrillated larynx, reticular, elastic, dense, unilocular and multilocular adipose); Cartilage (hyaline, fibrous and elastic); Bone tissue (non-lamellar and lamellar spongy and compact, tooth: cement and dentine, direct and indirect ossification), blood and lymphatic tissue; Muscle tissue (smooth, skeletal and cardiac striatum) and nervous tissue (in the central and peripheral nervous system).

Teaching methods

Screening of histological preparations in the classroom with indication of recognition strategies. Optical microscope tutorials, in groups of 25 students, led by the teacher with the aim of providing, To each student, the opportunity to practice in the autonomous recognition of histological preparations.

“As concerns the teaching methods of this course unit, all students must attend Module 1, 2 [https://www.unibo.it/en/services-and-opportunities/health-and-assistance/health-and-safety/online-course-on-health-and-safety-in-study-and-internship-areas] online, while Module 3 on health and safety is to be attended in class. Information about Module 3 attendance schedule is available on the website of your degree programme”

Different methods could be used in case of COVID-19 restrictions.

Assessment methods

The check consists of a preliminary practical light microscope test with which the teacher will be able to test the candidate's ability to recognize histological preparations. Failure to achieve sufficient exclusion leads to the continuation of the examination. The oral test will be based on topics of Cytology, Histology and Embryology according to the published Histology and Embryology 1 and Histology and Embryology 2. It is not permissible even in one of the three disciplines. In the event of a negative outcome of the oral test, the candidate will have the ability to keep the result achieved in the practical test or alternatively support it again. Voting for the practical test remains valid until the end of December 2021. The final vote, in the opinion of the committee, will take into account the weighted average of the results achieved.

Teaching tools

Mono and binocular optical microscopes, 5-head optical microscope for deepening histologic details with small groups of students, optical microscope connected to a projector via computers, powerpoint presentations. Histological preparations on the slide. Virtual histological preparations are available for display with computer tools and microscope simulation programs. Lesson will be provided with details for access.
