Learning outcomes

At the end of the module the student acquires methodological and application elements useful for integrating the knowledge obtained in the courses of Chemistry and Biochemistry.

Course contents

Molecular techniques for qualitative and quantitative DNA analysis, used in the field of clinical diagnostics, forensics, and research.

PCR and Real-time PCR, Gel electrophoresis, Southern blotting, DNA fingerprinting.

Applications of the indicated techniques. Exercises: kinship test, identification of suspects in forensic genetics, clinical diagnoses (Duchenne muscular dystrophy, Huntington's disease; sickle cell anemia, Sars-COV2 positivity…). Design of primers to amplify genes by PCR using specific softwares

The material is provided to students during each exercise

Teaching methods

The exercise is introduced by a short theoretical presentation on principles, methods and techniques subject to practical experience or by computer simulation

Assessment methods

The evaluation will take place in the context of the overall evaluation of the C.I. and in particular during the end of year interview

The exercises will be held in rooms equipped with computers
