Learning outcomes

The aim of the course is to study the interaction between politics and communication and it will analyze, with a comparative approach, the role of mass media in the consensus building process from the end of the 19th century to the present. At the end of the course, students are expected to: have a clear framework of the history of mass media and political communication from the end of 19th century to the present time; develop an in-depth knowledge of analytical tools to evaluate the influence of the media system on the consensus building process.

Course contents

The course will be devoted to the interaction between politics and communication within different historical environments, with regards in the role of mass media in the consensus building process and in the states propaganda. The course will analyse specific features that characterized the evolution of electoral campaigns during the 19th and 20th century (especially the Italian case) and the transformations that they produced on the mechanisms of political legitimacy.

Teaching methods

First half of the course: remote lessons

Second half: blended teaching activities, held in classrooms but also accessible remotely

Lessons, backed by power point as well as movies and web resources.

Official language: Italian.

Assessment methods

The exam consists of a written test, taking place in a computer lab. In 60 minutes the students will have to answer 2 open questions on the topics of lessons and textbooks.
