73475 - Virtual Modeling (L-Z)

Course Unit Page

Academic Year 2018/2019

Learning outcomes

At the end of the course, the student has the theoretical and applied fundamentals of parametric methodologies for modeling virtual products. The student also knows the techniques of realizing a DMU (Digital Mock-Up) product by using a CSG parametric modeler, history-based and feature-oriented and data exchange techniques between CSG and B- Rep.

Course contents

The course aims to deepen and develop knowledge and skills of students in relation to the theme of the design and development of new products. The specialization is functional to form a complete professional, with expertise on methodologies and tools that enhance and make more effective and efficient development of products, from their concept to the industrialization and production realization, through instruments based on three-dimensional modeling.

More specifically, the course will cover the topics listed below:

(1) life cycle, product complexity, the importance of the simulation, the CIM wheel.
(2) Concurrent engineering and collaborative design.
(3) Product specifications (project examples).
(4) The physical prototyping.
(5) Virtual prototyping (VR and AR).

Teaching methods

The course involves lectures and laboratory work. The laboratory exercises provide for the execution of some of the medium / high difficulty exercises in interactive mode. also it is assigned an autonomous operation of 3D modeling and put on a table of certain components from a real product. The exercise must be carried out independently by a group of 2-3 students who, at the end of the course, will have to present in virtual mode. The work will be reviewed during the exercise hours.

Assessment methods

The final exam consists in the presentation of self-employment, in the oral examination on theoretical issues and on the verification of the exercises performed during the course.

Teaching tools

The course involves the use of computer lab computers capable of managing interactive 3D graphics.
