Learning outcomes

At the end of the course, the student has the skills in the morpho-functional organization of the various cell types, of subcellular structures and extracellular components constituting the human tissues. Moreover he has the skills on their stem progenitors, on cellular proliferation and differentiation as well as on the mechanisms of histogenesis, tissue renewal and regeneration. The student knows the embryology, its regulatory mechanisms and major alterations.

Differentiation and histogenesis
Cells, tissues, organs, apparata, organisms
Histological differentiation and organization into four basic tissues.
Epithelial tissues
Embryonic development and distribution. ultrastructure and function of epithelial cells. Histological classification.
Covering and lining epithelium. Structure and function of basement membranes.
Structure and function of glands . Exocrine and endocrine secretions.
Histology and function of Exocrine Glands. Classification.
Overview of Endocrine System. Regulatory mechanism of endocrine secretion. Hormones.
Connective Tissue
Embryonic development and distribution. Cells and extracellular matrix (ECM): collagen and elastic fibers, amorphous ground substance. Interstitial fluid. Classification.
Classification of Connective tissue proper. Mucous connective tissue. Loose connective tissue. Reticular and elastic tissues. Dense regular and irregular tissues. Adipose tissues.
Overview, histological structure and classification of Cartilage. Perichondrium. Cartilage growth and repairing.
Bone and osteogenesis: overview. Trabecular and compact bone: cells and ECM. Dentin and cementum.
Blood and hematopoiesis. Structure and function of blood. Plasma and cells. histology of bone marrow and emopoietic cell differentiation.
Muscle tissue
Embryonic development. Classification and organization. Smooth muscle: ultrastructure and function. Contraction mechanism.
Skeletal Muscle : ultrastructure and organization of skeletal muscle fibers. Histology and function of Cardiac muscle.
Nervous tissue. Embryonic development, structure and function. Types of neurons. Ultrastructure of myelinated and unmyelinated nerve fibers. Ultrastructure of synapses. Structure and function of glia.

Teaching methods

The course consists of 5 UC of lectures including 2 UC of Cytology held by Professor Marcella Martinelli (see the teacher's website) and 3 UC of Histology which aim to make students acquire the topics described in detail in the program.

Assessment methods

The learning assessment will include the examination of slides at light microscopy that is introductory to the oral exam. The students that have not passed are not admitted to the oral exam. The oral exam is about Cytology, Histology and Embryology in according the contents published in Histology and Embryology 1 and Histology and Embryology 2 courses. A low mark in one of the three parts precludes the whole exam. The student can choose to keep the mark of examination of slides (valid until December 2019) or to repeat it. In the opinion of the examiners, the final assessment will be the weighed average of the three results.
The online registration to the examination is mandatory.
