Learning outcomes

At the end of the course the student will have a preparation that allows to know the basics of orthodontic treatment and to address and resolve simple orthodontic cases. In particular, the student is able to: diagnose malocclusions of I, II, III Angle's class and set the therapy; make a differential diagnosis of the malocclusions in the transverse plane; recognize the indications to orthodontic treatment in adult patients; plan cases of agenesis; know the periodontal implications of orthodontic treatment; know the therapeutic problems of tooth impactions.

Course contents

Modulo 1: Introduction to the course. Preventive orthodontics. Interceptive orthodontics. Orthodontics in the growing patient. Orthodontics in the adult patient. Retention. Changes induced by orthodontic movement in the periodontium. Transverse discrepancies. Tooth agenesis and impactions. Periodontal outcomes in the treatment of impacted canines. Management of third molars: indications for germectomy. Treatment of obstructive sleep apnea.

Modulo 2: Facial analysis and dento-labial analysis; aesthetic planning in orthodontics; the photographic documentation in dentistry and orthodontics; relationships between orthodontics and aesthetic adhesive dentistry; digital smile design; orthodontics in the multidisciplinary treatment of agenesis; presentation and discussion of clinical cases.
