Learning outcomes

The course aims at providing a detailed analysis of the different political cultures that, with regard to complex and even more globalized societies, simultaneously act in a very dynamic and articulate context from a sociological point of view. At the end of the course, students are expected to be able -to easily orientate themselves and make their own analyses by moving from the main sociological theories about the relationship between culture and globalization; -to compare and classify the main political cultures acting in the national and international political context; -to recognize and explain the present socio-cultural transformations involving and influencing such political cultures in different global and national backgrounds.

Course contents

The analysis of relationships between politics and the historical development of secularization process, as it can be recognized in contemporary world, is the thematic frame and the focus with regard to which the Course tries to provide a deep account of national and supranational political cultures and, specifically, of the different models of political trend acting on the international scene nowadays. The institutional part deals with the relationship between culture and politics (to what extent can we speak about a cultural dimension of politics or a political dimension of culture?) focusing on the contemporary Italian society and on political cultures involved in the national political system. The monographic part is devoted to the debate about war and peace.

Teaching methods

The teaching will be open to dialogue involving as much as possible students who wish to ask questions, require further information or participate.

Assessment methods

Learning evaluation consists of:

 

1) an oral examination at the end of the course. Texts that are required to be studied are shown in the bibliography, which contains both the ones related to the institutional part (see Texts A) and the others referred to the monographic part (see Texts B).

2) the oral exposition of a paper during the course (see C).

Non-frequenting students must stand only one written test about the above-mentioned texts (16 open questions within 120 minutes) and the oral examination. They are strongly recommended to contact prof. Leonardo Allodi.

Both frequenting and non-frequenting students are expected to agree with prof. Allodi the issue of their written paper which has to be sent by email to leonardo.allodi@unibo.it at least 10 days before the date of the exam.
