31416 - Laboratory Testing of Machines and Power Systems

Course Unit Page

Academic Year 2018/2019

Learning outcomes

Provide the skills required for the machine management and for the measures to be carried out to verify their performance.

Course contents

International System of Units: Basic and derived quantities. Comparison with the technical and Imperial systems. Conversion factors

Theory of errors. Accidental and systematic errors. Statistical approach to the error analysis, repeated tests, error propagation.

Elements of statistical inference. The normal, Student, F-Snedecor, chi square distribution and their usage for comparing the expected values of mean and variance. ANOVA.

Types of instruments and their verification: precision, accuracy, zero and linearity requirement, accuracy classes of the instruments. Static calibration using linear regression.

Measurements of temperature: the temperature scale and calibration references, thermometers dilation bulb and capillary glass and metal, Thermocouples, variation of electrical resistance. Precautions to be observed in the temperature measurement.

Strain measurements using strain gauges: Percentage change in resistance. measurement by the Wheatstone bridge.

Pressure measurements: Bourdon tube, diaphragm and piezoelectric pressure gauges.

Velocity and flow measurements in fluids: Pitot tube. throttling devices: diaphragm and venturi

Measurements of torque and power: Dynamometer. Froude hydraulic brake and eddy current brake.
