Learning outcomes

Students will learn fundamental topics and methodologies for the study of problems concerning the modelling, the analysis and the design of mechanical  transmissions components and hydraulic drives, and the fundamentals of automatic control.

Course contents

Drives (49 hours)

  • Introduction: power,  absorption,  efficiency,  torque-speed characteristics,  transients,  periodic range,  flywheels.
  • Couplers: classification,  solid couplings,  Hooke's joint,  constant velocity joints,  flexible joints,  dynamic modelling.
  • Clutches: classification,  disk friction clutches,  conical friction clutches,  transients.
  • Brakes: classification,  block brakes,  transients,  brake torque.
  • Gear trains: ordinary gearings, epyciclic trains,  differential trains,  change gears.
  • Variable-speed drives: classification,  choice of a variable-speed drive.
  • Cams: trajectory planning,  cam-systems.
  • Hydraulic transmissions: components,  pumps, hydraulic motors, hydraulic cilinders,  hydraulic circuits.

 

Lubrication (11 hours)

  • Introduction to lubricated kinematic pairs. Hydrodynamic lubrication. Hydrostatic lubrication.

    Teaching methods

    Theoretical lectures and application examples.

    Assessment methods

    Written examination: 5 questions about theoretical aspects and, mainly, applications.

    Optional oral examination for a score variation of 2-3 points at most.
