- Docente: Micaela Vannini
- Credits: 3
- Language: Italian
- Teaching Mode: Traditional lectures
- Campus: Bologna
- Corso: First cycle degree programme (L) in Chemical and Biochemical Engineering (cod. 6674)
Learning outcomes
By the end of the course, students will have gained experience with specific aspects of inorganic and organic chemistry. They will also have acquired the fundamental knowledge required to work safely in a chemistry laboratory and will be able to carry out experiments, as well as analyze and interpret experimental data.
Course contents
Basic knowledge of fundamental chemistry is required in order to benefit fully from this course.
Fluency in spoken and written Italian is a necessary prerequisite, as all lectures, tutorials, and course materials will be provided exclusively in Italian.
The laboratory component of the course is based on hands-on experiments, during which students will learn how to use some of the most common and basic laboratory techniques, such as:
-
Volumetric analysis
-
Chromatographic techniques
-
Synthesis, purification, and characterization of organic compounds
The following specific experiments will be carried out:
-
Qualitative analysis for the identification of organic functional groups
-
Complexometric titration
-
Synthesis, purification, and characterization of aspirin
-
Synthesis of nylon 6,6 and of an alkyd resin
-
Synthesis of biodiesel
-
Separation and purification via chromatographic techniques
Readings/Bibliography
The suggested textbook Organic Chemistry covers most of the topics addressed in the course.
Teaching methods
The course includes frontal lectures, during which the program topics are presented, and six laboratory sessions, with a mandatory minimum attendance of at least four.
In addition, due to the nature of the activities and teaching methods adopted, all students are required to complete Modules 1 and 2 on health and safety, available in e-learning format at:
https://www.unibo.it/it/servizi-e-opportunita/salute-e-assistenza/salute-e-sicurezza/sicurezza-e-salute-nei-luoghi-di-studio-e-tirocinio
Attendance of Module 3, which focuses on specific training in safety and health in the workplace, is also compulsory. Information regarding dates and methods of participation for Module 3 can be found on the official degree program website.
Assessment methods
Assessment is based on an oral examination, which will take into account the written reports on the laboratory experiments carried out during the course.
Teaching tools
Lecture notes and laboratory guidelines will be made available on the course website:
