Learning outcomes
The Laboratory provides an in-depth look at the techniques and practices for producing effective narrative content for various media and digital contexts. At the end of the Laboratory, students will be able to produce complex multimedia content through the application of storytelling techniques; they will be able to plan communication strategies based on a multimedia or transmedia approach to storytelling; and have mastered the tools for producing audiovisual content for the web and major platforms.
Course contents
The Laboratory offers an in-depth exploration of the opportunities offered by multimedia storytelling as a communication strategy for business, brands, and cultural institutions.
By combining analysis of Italian and international cases, individual and group exercises, theoretical focus sessions, and simulations, the Laboratory aims to provide participants with a broad understanding of the practices and methods of developing multimedia narratives.
A large focus will be on storytelling experiences developed through digital platforms and media. These include storytelling on social media, website, and blogs, visual storytelling through videos, and audio storytelling through podcasts.
Attending students will be actively involved in the development of a multimedia storytelling project, simulating all its key phases: idea and design, strategic planning, content production, and cross-media promotion.
Working groups will be formed to allow all participants to interact with each other and acquire soft skills related to project management, teamwork, digital creativity, and critical thinking.
Project work completed at the end of the course can be shared with the program’s Web Editorial Team, who will evaluate its possible publication on institutional social media channels and in the Compassunibo digital magazine.

Teaching methods
The teaching methodology used to support the learning process and achieve the course objectives is structured around:
- Lectures Analysis and discussion of case studies
- Group work
- Practical simulations
- Project work with the support of the Digital Production Laboratory (Pro.Digi) of the Department of Political and Social Sciences.
The Laboratory will consist of two-hour sessions, held partly in the classroom and partly at the Pro.Digi Laboratory. Students attending the course are required to attend at least 70% of the sessions.
Assessment methods
The final evaluation of the course includes a judgement of suitability.
ATTENDING STUDENTS
The final exam for students who attend at least 70% of the sessions involves the implementation of a project through group work. Specifically, students are required to:
- Give a presentation of the project work in progress
- Submit the final multimedia project during the exam sessions
The final judgement of suitability will consider the following factors:
- attendance at the meetings (10%)
- active participation (20%)
- presentation and implementation of the project (70%)
The project development and implementation methods will be explained during lessons.
NON-ATTENDING STUDENTS
The final exam for non-attending students consists of a paper on themes and issues related to the use of multimedia storytelling applied to the world of business, brands, and cultural institutions.
The focus may also be the analysis of a specific case study.
The topic can be discussed and agreed upon via email or by scheduling an appointment on Teams at least four weeks before the exam date for which you intend to register.
Paper submission guidelines:
Length: min. 5,000 words – max 8,000 words (excluding bibliography and web references)
Structure: Title, Text, Bibliography, Web References
File format: PDF or Word
Submission method: eMail to michela.zingone@unibo.it [mailto:michela.zingone@unibo.it] by midnight on the day before the exam date.
Teaching tools
Slide, videos, and podcast will be used in classroom to support the learning experience.
A selection of course materials will be made available on the Virtual platform.
Participants will also have access to the digital equipment at the Pro.Digi Laboratory of the Department of Political and Social Sciences.
