Learning outcomes

The philosophy Seminars propose general objectives, which are those specific teaching seminar: (1) to train the students to philosophical discussion urging participation in conferences and presentations of Italian and foreign scholars; (2) deepen the topics of the courses through participation in philosophical lectures by specialists also of other universities; (3) broaden their thematic and methodological horizons to complete offered teaching.

Course contents

Medicine, Gender & Eros

After a general introduction to the historical and cultural context of the premodern Arabo-Islamic world, and to the development of science and technique in that context, the seminar will focus on the theme of gender in Mediaeval Arabic technical and scientific sources.

The thematic focus is meant to invite the students to explore the different thematic lines in a personal, original and creative way.

A reading of choice between: 

- 1) Al-Tusi, The Sultan's Sex Potions;

- 2) Al-Shayzari, Los Secretos del Coito;

- 3) Al-Nafzawi, Il Giardino Profumato.

Teaching methods

The seminar will begin with some frontal teaching as way of introduction, the analysis and group discussion of primary sources. Students will be encouraged to follow their specific interests developed during the course and, in the second part of the seminar, to present the results of their individual or group research in class. In general, they will be invited to take active part to the discussion in class.

Assessment methods

To obtain eligibilty it will be necessary to attend al least 11 lessons out of the total of 15.

From this compulsory attendance will be excepted only

• Students who are currently abroad on Erasmus program
• Working students, who must document, by a declaration of their employer, that their working time makes attendance impossible for them
  
• Students with a certification of disability
• Students who are sick and can produce a medical certificate

Only for these two categories of students, eligibility will be obtained by taking a short oral examination.

Students with disabilities and Specific Learning Disorders (SLD)
Students with disabilities or Specific Learning Disorders are entitled to special adjustments according to their condition, subject to assessment by the University Service for Students with Disabilities and SLD.
