Learning outcomes

At the end of the class, students have acquired knowledge of the principles, methods and techniques of Ecdotics, applied in particular to texts of Italian literature. They possess basic notions of the plurality of approaches that animate the debate on textual studies, from Stemmatology to Textual bibliography, from Textual criticism to Textual theory, from Drama philology to Authorial philology, with a particular focus on problems related to Editorial philology and the application of the philological method to Digital texts.

Course contents

The course is designed for students who have developed an interest in Italian literary philology, and aims to provide the theoretical and practical tools needed to read, interpret and prepare a critical edition, applying them to Leopardi's Canti as a case study. Contents: 1. What is Ecdotics: introduction to the course; history, methods, tools; 2. After Lachmann: post-philology?; 3. What is textual bibliography?; 4. Author philology and theatrical philology; 5. Editorial philology and digital philology; 6. The journal “Ecdotica”: a cultural adventure; 7. CASE STUDY: Leopardi's Canti, texts, variants and apparatus: methods and tools; 8. CASE STUDY: Phenomenology of Leopardi's manuscripts; 9. CASE STUDY: Internal and external history of Leopardi's Canti; 10. CASE STUDY: Moroncini's critical edition (1927); 11. CASE STUDY: Peruzzi's critical edition (1981); 12. CASE STUDY: De Robertis' critical edition (1984); 13. CASE STUDY: Gavazzeni's critical edition (2006) 1 Text, Apparatus, Varia Lectio Manuscripts; 14. Teaching methods

The course consists of lessons delivered using slides and online teaching materials, uploaded and shared on VIRTUALE, and exercises that students can also complete digitally.

Students with SLDs or temporary or permanent disabilities are advised to contact the relevant university office (https://site.unibo.it/studenti-con-disabilita-e-dsa/it) in good time and, 15 days in advance, the lecturer, who will propose any adjustments to the programme.

Assessment methods

The exam consists of an oral exam in two parts: the first part will test the student's knowledge and understanding of the course topics and bibliography, while in the second part, students will choose one of Leopardi's Canti on which to carry out a philological analysis (oral). The assessment will be based on the following criteria: fail (corresponding to a mark lower than 18/30): absence or serious lack of basic knowledge in any part of the programme; serious errors in reading the critical apparatus; satisfactory grade (corresponding to 18-21): possession of basic knowledge with some gaps in preparation; poor ability to connect data, poor autonomy in reworking content; consistent errors in reading the critical apparatus; fair grade (corresponding to 22-24): possession of basic knowledge; fair ability to connect data, fair autonomy in reworking content; errors in reading the critical apparatus; good grade (corresponding to 25-27): possession of intermediate level knowledge; precision and ability to connect data, good autonomy in reworking content; few errors in reading the critical apparatus; excellent grade (corresponding to 28-30): possession of medium-high level knowledge; excellent ability to connect data and critically and consciously rework content; correct reading of the critical apparatus; honours implies the study and editing of extra-curricular materials.
