Learning outcomes

At the end of the module, students will be familiar with basic tools (grammar books, dictionaries and corpora of parallel and other online and print reference materials). They will also be familiar with fundamental translation techniques, methodologies, and strategies to apply in pre-translation analysis of the source text, documentation, drafting and proofreading of the target text, according to its communicative functions and the translation assignment. They will be able to use such strategies to translate a variety of semi-specialized texts between French and Italian, showing a medium-high level of translation skills.

Course contents

This module (40 hours) aims at training students to deal confidently with texts of several different types from French into Italian.

Moreover, the course focuses on increasing awareness of available Internet resources and providing tools for evaluating the reliability of documentation found online.

The goal of the course is to optimize students' linguistic skills and offer them effective translation strategies.

The translations will be analyzed and discussed in class.

Teaching methods

The teaching methodology will focus on group and individual translation in class and on the analysis of the main translation issues that arise.

The module requires compulsory attendance (70 per cent of the lessons).

Assessment methods

In the final written exam, students will be required to translate a specialized text of about 400 words (3 hours), similar to those dealt with during the course. Students will be allowed to use dictionaries, glossaries, and documents available on the Internet.

A graded mock exam will be held mid-course; the results will not count for the final evaluation.

Marks

30-30L: Excellent level. The candidate possesses excellent translation skills, with a very high level of competence in the target language.

27-29: Above average level. The candidate makes only minor errors, and shows a solid command of the required skills and competences.

24–26: Generally sound level. The candidate displays a number of shortcomings, indicating a reasonable command of the required skills and competences.

21-23: Adequate level. The candidate displays significant shortcomings and only an adequate command of the required skills and competences.

18–20: Minim level. The candidate only meets the minimum level required and shows a minimal command of the required skills and competences.

< 18 Fail: The candidate does not meet the required standard and shows a wholly inadequate command of the required skills and competences. The candidate will have to repeat the examination.
