Academic Year 2025/2026

  • Teaching Mode: Traditional lectures
  • Campus: Forli
  • Corso: First cycle degree programme (L) in Languages and Technologies for Intercultural Communication (cod. 5979)

Learning outcomes

At the end of the module, the student knows the documentation tools and the basic translation methodologies and techniques; is able to apply them in the pre-translation analysis of the source text and in the drafting of the target text, depending on the communicative functions of the texts to be translated and the specified translation assignment; is able to apply these dynamics in the translation of a variety of non-specialized texts from Chinese to Italian, in accordance with a basic level of translation competence.

Course contents

The course involves the translation of texts of various types, with varying degrees of difficulty and length, with the comparation of different expressive characteristics of both languages, and with the learning of basic techniques for translating from Chinese to Italian. The focus will be on the translation of complex syntactic structures of the written language and on the specialized terminology.

The course will begin with the presentation of the type and genre of the source text; identification of the text’s dominant function; individual or group translation of the text to be carried out with the instructor’s assistance; final analysis and commentary on the translation.

Through the analysis of translations and translation challenges, a reflection on the main translation strategies in Chinese-Italian translation will be developed.

The course is a semester-long and has a total duration of 40 hours.

It is reminded that attendance is mandatory for 70% of the course.

Assessment methods

The exam will consist of two parts.
The first part, without a dictionary, will require translating into Italian words drawn from the texts and topics covered during the course.
The second part, with a dictionary, will involve translating from Chinese into Italian a text of similar type to those analysed and included in the textbook.

During the exam, students are allowed to use only paper dictionaries. The use of electronic devices will not be permitted.

The final grade for the integrated course "Translation from Italian to Chinese I" will be determined by the average of the grades from the two component exams (a written exam for "Translation from Chinese to Italian I" and a written exam for "Interpretazione Dialogica tra il Cinese (seconda lingua) e l’Italiano I").
