Learning outcomes
Students will learn about the main elements of national, EU, and international regulations governing the activities of companies operating in the sector, and will be able to apply the relevant legislation to specific cases. Students are able to discuss the most current aspects of the debate on the contractual regulation of inter-subjective relationships and civil liability regimes. Finally, they are familiar with the most recent interventions by international and EU bodies aimed at promoting certain aspects of transport in its various forms, promoting transport safety, and regulating prevention and liability issues in relation to environmental pollution.
Course contents
The course aims to provide a general understanding of the main elements of maritime law in light of the current transport situation. During the lessons, the national, EU, and international regulatory sources in force on the subject will be examined, as well as the most recent European transport policy proposals. The most relevant aspects of the subject will be outlined from a private and public law perspective: from transport infrastructure and services to transport contracts, from the regulation of state concessions to port system authorities and the regime governing port security and environmental pollution.
One of the main goals of the course is to give students the tools they need to evaluate and understand the complex world of transportation and to grasp the legal issues behind modern phenomena and practices in maritime/air navigation and transportation.
Readings/Bibliography
Students can refer to the slides that will be used in class and the materials that the instructor will provide during the lessons.
Teaching methods
Teaching takes place through lectures, also using PowerPoint presentations, held during the first semester and aimed at encouraging student involvement.
Assessment methods
The assessment of expected knowledge takes place during the exam, which aims to evaluate the achievement of the planned learning objectives. The exam consists of an interview with the professor and teaching assistants on the topics covered in the course program. The assessment will take into account knowledge of institutional profiles, the ability to analyze doctrinal and jurisprudential orientations, to make connections between the various parts of the program, and to develop critical arguments, as well as the clarity of presentation.

Particular attention will be paid to the student's ability to identify, within the regulatory sources and reference bibliographic material, information useful for learning and subsequently explaining the peculiarities and specificities of the discipline. The oral exam will be considered passed if the student correctly answers three main questions relating to the topics covered in the exam program, with the clarification that the student's preparation may be assessed on the basis of additional questions aimed at specifying aspects relating to the three main questions. During the assessment, the Commission may give a grade of excellence if, in presenting the content, the student demonstrates that they have acquired a comprehensive and critical understanding of the topics covered, as well as mastery of expression and specific language. During the exam, the use of support materials such as textbooks, notes, and electronic devices is not permitted
