90133 - Media and Geography (1) (M-Z)

Academic Year 2025/2026

  • Teaching Mode: Traditional lectures
  • Campus: Bologna
  • Corso: First cycle degree programme (L) in Communication Sciences (cod. 5975)

Learning outcomes

At the end of the course the student has acquired a critical knowledge of material production and cultural meaning by which media create geographical facts and imaginative geographies, producing social relationships and space.

Course contents

The course deals with the models and representations that describe the contemporary migration crisis at the gates of Europe. During the lessons and through the use of maps, videos, documentaries, films and graphic novels, the lines of power that fuel the current border regime on migration will be shown. The concept of borders and the idea of the Mediterranean will be “overturned” in order to look beyond the current neo-colonial representations of migration to Europe.
