Learning outcomes

At the end of the course, the student is able to recognize the basic concepts of diagnosis and treatment of the main central NS neurosurgical affections as: cerebral tumor (malignant and benign); crania-encephalic traumas; degenerative disorders of the spine and the cord tumors; hydrocephalus and the intracranial hypertension syndrome. Interactive discussions with the students (questions answered answers at the end of each lesson) will permit to evaluate the level of comprehension of the students. Particular attention will be paid to the early and prompt diagnosis of emergency situations, as the cranio-encephalic traumas, the intracranial hypertensions syndrome is children and adults and the their own "warning symptoms".

- Diagnosis and treatment of cranial traumas;

- Diagnosis and treatment of vascular lesions;

- Diagnosis and treatment of cerebral tumors;

- Diagnosis and treatment of hydrocephalus in adults and children.

Teaching methods

Course will consist in frontal interactive lessons with clinical cases discussion, aimed at the evaluation of the comprehension of the main neurosurgical notions.

Assessment methods

The final examination consists of an oral test in which the student will discuss one topic taken from the program. As part of the interview, questions will also be asked to evaluate the depth of the knowledge on the two topics and on other topics of the program, the critical thinking ability that links together different aspects of knowledge and the achievement of a comprehensive understanding of the topics addressed in class. The exam will be considered passed if the student has demonstrated sufficient knowledge in each topic. The student’s ability to move across the various topics of the Neurosurgery program will be also evaluated. The student’s achievement of a comprehensive view of the topics addressed in class, together with their critical thought, the ability to make associations, the demonstration of rich and intelligible expression and use of specialist’s language will be evaluated with scores of excellence.
