75289 - Functional Assessment and Clinical Tests in Physiotherapy - (IM)

Academic Year 2025/2026

  • Teaching Mode: Traditional lectures
  • Campus: Bologna
  • Corso: First cycle degree programme (L) in Physiotherapy (cod. 8476)

Learning outcomes

After completing this module the student will have the ability to apply knowledge and understanding about the preventive and rehabilitative needs of the subject with neurolesion through the various functional evaluation methods.

Course contents

Introduction to the Concept of Functional Assessment within the Physiotherapy Process

  • Methodological aspects of clinical reasoning.

  • Collection of anamnestic and psychosocial data relevant to therapeutic and rehabilitative interest, with reference to the ICF classification system (International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health).

Observation and Assessment of Functional Systems in Individuals with Neurological Lesions:
  • Evaluation of structural and functional integrity and related impairments;

  • Evaluation of activities and their limitations;

  • Evaluation of participation in social life and its restrictions;

  • Evaluation of contextual factors: environment and people (facilitators and barriers).

Measurement of Functional Systems in Individuals with Neurological Lesions:
  • Characteristics and psychometric properties of measurement scales
    (validity, reliability, sensitivity);

  • Levels of measurement
    (nominal, ordinal, interval, and ratio scales);

  • Composite and multidimensional scales
    (profiles and indices);

  • Timing of measurement
    (improvement, goal achievement, follow-up).

Main Outcome Measures:
  • Key tools for impairment measurement;

  • Key tools for activity limitation measurement;

  • Key tools for participation restriction measurement.

Teaching methods

Theoretical lessons.
If possible, practical workshops with patients presenting diagnoses relevant to physiotherapy, along with appropriate clinical assessment using standardized measurement scales.

Assessment methods

The learning assessment is carried out through a final exam, which verifies the acquisition of the expected knowledge and skills by means of a written test lasting 1 hour, taken without the help of notes or books.

The test consists of 23 multiple-choice questions (worth 1 point each for correct answers) and 6 open-ended questions (worth 1.5 points each).
Three of the six open-ended questions are clinical cases, which must be evaluated using the appropriate assessment scales.

The total score is 31.5 points.
