Learning outcomes
At the end of the course: 1. The student has the theoretical knowledge to put 20th-century poetry in the context of the intellectual movements and history of ideas of European culture and civilization. 2. The student commands a methodology of analysis of 20th-century poetry characterized by rhetorical, stylistic, and linguistic viewpoints through an intertextual, interdisciplinary lens.
Course contents
Montale's Poetry: Conclusioni provvisorie from La bufera e altro, Farfalla di Dinard and Satura.
The course will be a total of 60 hours for 12 credits. Classes will take place Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday from 11 to 13, Room IV, via Zamboni 38.
Lessons will start on Wednesday, January 29, 2025 (the course will end on April 8).
Readings/Bibliography
Both of Montale's works require the reading and preparing the pieces in the editions commented «Oscar» or «Lo Specchio» Mondadori.
The critical bibliography will be provided in the form of an electronic dispensation during the lessons; those who are not attending can find it in the teaching material.
The critical text of references is as follows: Montale, edited by P. Marini, N. Scaffai, Carocci, Roma 2019.
The program for non-attending students includes the full entire reading of E. Montale, Tutte le poesie, Mondadori, Milano, any edition after 1984
Students with SLD or temporary or permanent disabilities. Assessment methods
Assessment consists of a viva voce examination aiming to assess the knowledge and critical skills acquired by the candidate during the course.
1. First-class marks will be awarded to candidates who demonstrate an ability to analyse texts in depth and to produce an organic overview of the topics covered in the course. Overall mark between 27 and 30 cum laude(high linguistic ability is required).
2. A mostly mnemonic knowledge of the subject, analytical skills lacking depth, and correct but not always apposite expression will result in a modest mark. Overall mark between 23 and 26.
3. Elementary knowledge, superficial understanding, poor analytical skills, and inapposite expression will lead to a pass or only slightly higher mark. Overall mark between 18 and 22.
4. Gaps in the candidate’s knowledge, inapposite language, and inadequate engagement with the secondary literature offered in the course will result in a fail mark.
