98857 - FONDAMENTI DI IMPIANTI CHIMICI

Academic Year 2024/2025

  • Teaching Mode: Traditional lectures
  • Campus: Bologna
  • Corso: First cycle degree programme (L) in Chemical methodologies for products and processes (cod. 6006)

Learning outcomes

The course is aimed at introducing basic tools for the understanding of a chemical plant: elementary methods for the application of mass and energy balance to single equipment and plants; mass and heat transfer mechanisms and their role in selected unit operations of the chemical and process industry; main configurations and operating modes of chemical reactors.

Course contents

Material and energy balances for chemical equipment and plants: methods and applications.

Simple models for the chemical and process industry equipment: equilibrium stage. Application of Raoult’s and Henry’s laws.

Heat and mass transfer: main mechanics and applications to the chemical and process industry.

Chemical reactors: main configurations and operating modes.

Lectures notes on “Virtuale”

W.L. McCabe, J.C. Smith, P. Harriott, Unit Operations of Chemical Engineering, 5^ ed., McGraw-Hill, 1993.

This book is not formally adopted as textbooks nor followed in a detailed way.

Teaching methods

The lessons on the above-mentioned topics and solution of exercises are given in class in the standard format, according to the official timetable. The exercises are aimed at helping the students to gradually acquire the skills to solve simple calculations as well as to apply their knowledge to the solution of practical problems.

Assessment methods

The final assessment will be via an oral exam. The goal of the exam is to ascertain the full understanding of both the basic principles and the calculation methods addressed in the lectures. The achievement of the main goals of the course will be assessed, specifically:

the capability to adopt simple calculation techniques and analysis methods, which are presented during the course, in order to understand the working principles of the equipment;

the capability to use the outcomes obtained by the above basic tools to improve the performances of equipment and processes of the chemical industry.

Teaching tools

Blackboard and video projector.
