16042 - Topographical Veterinary Anatomy I

Learning outcomes

At the end of the course the Student knows and is able to recognize the limits, topographyand stratigraphy of the regions of the limbs of the animal and the pathwaysof the blood vessels and nerves therein. The Student is also able to apply the acquired knowledge for better learning of subjects related clinical practice and veterinary inspection.

Course contents

Limits, anatomical relationship, stratigrafy, principal blood vessels and nerves of the anatomical regions of the forelimbs and hindlimbs of domestic mammals.

Teaching methods

The teaching is composed of academic lessons (14 hours) and practical lessons (8 x 5 hours)

Lectures in which all the details of the different anatomical regions will be considered. Practical activity and dissection of whole animals (dogs, cats, foals, sheep) or forelimbs and hindlimbs of large mammals, such as horse or cattle.

Assessment methods

The examination consists of an oral examination. The test makes use of graphic aids and photographs taken from different topographical atlas of veterinary anatomy, usually used during the course. They are also used preparations of the dissecting room. The student will be required, in succession, two separate topics, one related to the thoracic limb, the other to pelvic limb. Within each of them will be assessed the degree of knowledge acquired and the recognition capabilities of the structures named on some images subjected to observation. In the overall assessment, it will also consider the propriety of language in the use of appropriate anatomical terminology. The test is passed if the candidate answers in a sufficiently comprehensive to both topics. The test is passed with a grade of at least 18/30. In case of the highest grade (30/30), honors may be awarded.

The student has the right to refuse the verbalization of the proposed positive grade at least 1 time.
