Learning outcomes
By the end of the course the student learns the basic concepts of the statistical methodology, with a particular focus on the biological applications: she/he is able to interpret simple statistical tests on biomedical data.
Course contents
The main topics of the course are:
1) Introductory concepts: statistical variables, sample and population and experimental studies.
2) Descriptive statistics univariate and multivariate, considering association between two qualitative variables and correlation between two quantitative variables.
3) Introduction to probability.
4) Inferential statistics: estimation and hypothesis testing.

The lecture notes provided by the teacher are the main reference for the course.

Lectures and tutorials concerning the main topics of the exam.
Assessment methods
The assessment is carried out by means of a written exam.
The written examination has a duration of 1 hour and it includes:
Presentation of a data matrix that students are asked to analyze from a statistical point of view by following a series of questions. In particular
- First Part: 1 open question concerning the basic concepts of statistics, evaluated with 4 or 5 points
- Second Part: 4/5 open-ended questions on notions and methodologies of descriptive statistics seen in class. The questions are evaluated form 3 to 5 points each. The total for this part is between 18 and 20 points.
- Third Part: 1 open question on the methodology of inferential studies, evaluated with 6 or 7 points.
The final result is integrated with that of the Applied Physics test. The overall examination is considered passed if both tests are successful.
The FINAL SCORE of the integrated course will be calculated as arithmetic mean between the results of the Statistics and Applied Physics tests; if the arithmetic mean is not an integer, verbalizable, the rounding will be carried out considering as predominant the test relative to the teaching with the greatest number of credits (Applied Physics).
"Lode" will be recognized if at least in one course the student gets honours and in both courses the score achieved is 30/30.
