Academic Year 2024/2025

  • Teaching Mode: Traditional lectures
  • Campus: Rimini
  • Corso: First cycle degree programme (L) in Fashion Cultures and Practices (cod. 9064)

Learning outcomes

At the end of the seminar (activity strictly pertinent with the objectives of the Degree Programme) the student gains competences and specific knowledge of the Fashion field.

Course contents

Aiming to offer to our students of the Third Year various teaching activities that may potentially disclose potential future opportunities in the field of Fashion, the Bachelor Degree in "Culture e Pratiche della Moda" has planned throughout the years a relevant number of Seminars and Workshops. These teaching activities are held by scholars working in the fields of Fashion Studies and the Humanities and freelance professionals who are experts in various fields strictly related to Fashion (web design, photography, analysis of texts and communication, creation of events, archives, fashion collections, fashion styling, computer science applied to fashion, and so on). Given their nature, which is often practical and typical of a workshop, our Seminars of the Third Year are limited enrollment courses with compulsory attendance.

WORKSHOP "TEXT ANALYSIS AND WRITING"

(LECTURER: ROLANDO VITALI).

The aim of this workshop is to provide students with the basic skills for analytical reading of literary, non-fiction and academic texts, and for writing argumentative, descriptive and popular texts of academic and professional nature. By the end of the course, the students will be able to read, understand and analyse the contents and the rhetorical aspects of complex texts, and to write clear and solidly argued essays, identifying and correctly choosing the appropriate communicative register, correctly using grammatical, syntactic and semantic structures, and mastering the logical construction of arguments.

The students will work on a series of working texts, dedicated to a single theme, which will be used to illustrate the variety of possible textual forms relating to the same subject: from narrative texts, to descriptive texts, to popular articles and academic essays.

The topic proposed by the lecturer this year - which can be changed and, in any case, will be agreed with the students during the first lessons - is the relation of humans and society with nature and environment.

Starting from this theme, work will be done in particular on the forms of argumentation, summary and description.

The workshop will focus, in particular, on illustrating the following points and strengthening the related operational skills:

The text and the different text types

Textual correctness: punctuation, sentence construction, paragraphing

The importance of linguistic register: identifying the addressee, context and purpose of the text

The specificities of argumentative texts

Academic texts: term papers, theses, academic articles.

Elements of academic writing: abstract, citations and bibliography

Thesis writing: problem setting, text division, writing, revisions

Expository and descriptive texts

The reading process: content understanding and stylistic-rhetorical analysis

The writing process: planning, drafting, revision

Argumentation: logical-argumentative and rhetorical-stylistic aspects

Description: rhetorical and functional aspects.

Readings/Bibliography

Texts chosen and provided by the teacher.

Teaching methods

Due to the practical nature of workshops, course attendance is strongly recommended.

For eligibility, at least 24 of the 30 teaching hours must be attended.

During the seminar sessions, traditional lessons will be kept to a minimum, with the emphasis on common activities of reading and analysing texts, writing, and common discussions.

The common work will be based on the reading of texts, individual writing of textual works and common analysis of them.

The primary texts will be commented on and analysed from a content, formal and stylistic point of view; the students' work will be discussed collectively (anonymously, of course) with particular reference to its formal, linguistic and grammatical correctness, as well as its argumentative and stylistic appropriateness.

Assessment methods

At the end of the workshop the lecturer will assess the presence and commitment of the students, and their ability to construct the analysis of the texts and their writing project, both individually and in a team.

Teaching tools

PC workstations, handouts, texts, writing materials.
