Learning outcomes
At the end of the course the student, through lectures (with the audio-visual supports) and practical sections, will learn the principles that regulate specialized surgical techniques in small animals as: surgery of the ear, salivary glands, eye, chest and nervous system. The student also will know the guidelines on the minimally invasive endoscopic surgery, the clinical evaluation of the patient with articular diseases and the physiotherapy approach (manual and instrumental techniques). The student, based on the diagnosis, will be able to evaluate the applicability of different surgical techniques. Furthermore, he/she will be able to understand and choose a rehabilitation protocol for the most common orthopaedic and neurological surgical pathologies.
Course contents
The student will know the basics and principles of the most common surgical specialist techniques, related to: ear, salivary gland, eye, chest and nervous system.
It will be also provided issues on minimally invasive endoscopic surgery, on clinical evaluation of the patient with joint diseases and on physiotherapy approach with manual and instrumental techniques, that regulate the management of the surgical patient in the pre- and post-operative period.
In particular:
- Modules 1 and 7 will guide the student to manual and instrumental techniques of physical rehabilitation in veterinary medicine, proposing the guidelines that regulate the management of the orthopedic and neurological surgical patients in the pre- and post-operative period.
- Module 2 provides for the deepening of the knowledge of the principles and suitable instrumentations to realize a complete examination of the visual apparatus. The main affections of ocular adnexa and the ocular globe will be reported and described. Practical exercise will be also provided to the students for experincing objective examination of the ocular apparatus and simulation of ocular interventions on animal model.
- Module 3 aims to provide the principles and interventional practices that regulate thoracic surgery in small animals. Moreover, this module will be also focused on: a) the surgical approach to stenosis of the ear canal; and b)the surgical therapy of the salivary glands when sialocele or salivar neoplasia occur.
- Module 4 aims to introduce the student to the most innovative techniques of minimally invasive endoscopic surgery for small animals.
- Module 5 has the purpose to provide to the student guidelines that regulate the clinical-surgical approach to the most common central and peripheral neurological pathologies of dogs and cats, with particular reference to: intervertebral disc herniation, Spinal trauma and Treatment of pathologies of neurosurgical interest.
- Module 6 will introduce the student to orthopedic surgery through the clinical evaluation of the patient with joint pathologies of the fore- and hindlimbs. The decision-making process of the different conservative and / or surgical treatments will also be provided.

Teaching methods
It will be provided to the students lectures, correlated with videos and interactive guided discussion of specific clinical cases. The topics, that require, will be completed by any practical lessons.
Assessment methods
The final evaluation of the students will be based on the outcome of a final test with multiple choice questions on the topics discussed in the different modules; and partly on participation in the classroom during group work and discussion with the teacher.
The final evaluation is expressed with a mark out of thirty. The course is passed with a score of at least: 18/30. In the case of maximum marks (30/30), honors can be attributed.
When a positive outcome is achieved, the student could ask to refuse the mark. The refusal must be granted by the teacher at least once on the single course.
If there are students with specific disabilities or DSA, they have to contact the teacher by email (and Dr. Trombetti in c / c) in order to receive adaptations of teaching during the lesson or in the final evaluation phase.
